This little scrap of brown paper is perhaps the most fabulous thing I have by Terry. It’s the only known black and blue colourway of Double Spiral 1952. It was pressed with the back of a spoon on Terry’s kitchen floor in St Ives and reminds me of the rough-and-ready materials used by Alfred Wallis. You can see Terry has employed the same lino block, re-inked and turned upside down on top of the first impression to form a sort of spiral dance between two fishing boats. The incidental shapes that appeared as a result informed Terry’s painting for the rest of his career. I would love it to go to a special collection somewhere, it really should... any ideas?
